what dreams may come

October 26, 2008

My dreams have been coming in the form of partial movies recently.  It’s a little strange to be perfectly honest.  I’m used to odd dreams, people and events strung together in a form that doesn’t quite make sense apart from my psyche.  But these dreams make sense, at least if I were watching them in a theater rather than the back of eyelids.

Last night’s feature even had a catchy animation through the opening credits.  From what I can remember, the story had something to do with a heist and the mob.  These two guys were transporting the goods in a white cargo van.  In the process of changing vehicles, i.e., stealing a new van that their employer had scoped out for them, the van’s owner stumbles upon the crooks.  The thief in the passenger seat tried to talk his way out of the situation, because apparently these guys were the non-violent sort of criminals.  Unfortunately, the owner of the van was a character straight out of the Sopranos.  I don’t remember for sure if he shot the smooth-talking dude or just frightened him a bit.  What I do remember is that Tony Soprano dude was actually the boss for this particular heist.  I guess he set up the van swap to check in on his transporters and make sure they realize what’s at stake if they mess this particular job up.

That’s all I remember of this particular plot.  Maybe not quite ready for Hollywood, but it’s certainly better than the night before.  So here is an important question … how the hell am I supposed interpret this dream?  The dreams that survive my incessant snoozing tend to make some sense if I take a Jungian approach, i.e., compensating for some pressure which has not yet crossed the bridge from unconscious to conscious.  Like the dream where I was waiting for a friend inside of Mars Hill Graduate School when the building began to slowly collapse over me.  I stayed by the door through the slow motion event, waiting for my friend until the last possible moment, which I soon realized was a moment too late.  Not a pleasant night of sleep, but at least it made sense the next day.

Or there was the dream where I found myself racing through the airport with half an hour to my flight, only to end up in customs with an absurd quantity of luggage that I didn’t realize I’d packed.  How thankful was I when an old family friend showed up to help me through.  Traveling and “baggage”… that’s oozing with metaphor.  And of course, my “favorite” of recent weeks, the one where I failed the test and Dan Allender went all stern and fatherly on me.  Wow … nothing like a bit of failure and futility mixed with some father issues to set the tone for your day!  (No sarcasm here … none at all)

Seriously though … animated opening sequences, heists, pacifistic/smooth talking crooks, and mob bosses?  Ideas?
